13:55 Chelmsford - BUCKLAND BEAU 7/1 1 Point Each-Way (4 places at SkyBet, Ladbrokes, Betfair and Coral) I was very surprised to see Buckland Beau this much bigger in the market in comparison to Unit Of Assessment. He comes into this 2lb well in after finishing a very close second over course and distance on his most recent start. Although he hasn't won for some time, his last win came in higher grade off a 12lb higher mark so he is well handicapped enough to be competitive here, especially if the first time cheekpieces have a positive effect. The draw isn't ideal but the favourite is drawn even wider so it doesn't explain the bigger than expected price difference. 16:05 Newcastle - LAZARUS 9/2 1 Point Win Lazarus got up late last time from off the pace and a combination of this step up in trip, and the switch to Newcastle which favours those who are held up. The Amy Murphy stable is still going strong and if he handles the tapeta he could be difficult to stop....

14:00 Lingfield - ALFRED HUTCHINSON 10/1 0.5 Points Each-Way Alfred Hutchinson looks overpriced in this handicap and is worth an each-way investment. He finished second in a higher grade than this behind a rival who went on to complete a hat-rick, despite missing the break. The winner isn't the only one from that race to have advertised the form, with the 5th and 9th both winning races since. He can be forgiven his latest run where he was too far back to get involved in a race where it paid to be prominent. 15:15 Doncaster - WARRIORS TALE 14/1 1 Point Each-Way (Boylesports Paying 4 Places) L'Ami Serge's claims in this are clear for all to see, but that means there may be each-way value elsewhere in the market, in the shape of Warrior's Tale. Paul Nicholls' charge ran a huge race when beaten a neck in a class two handicap chase at Newbury at the beginning of December. The winner, Gold Present, followed up winning a class one listed handicap much like toda...

15:45 Lingfield - MOSSEYB 9/2 2 Points Win Mosseyb caught the eye in no uncertain fashion on debut here at Lingfield on his first start, he missed the break and went right at the start but made smooth headway under a hands and heels ride. He disappointed on his next start where he pulled far too hard to get competitive, the cheekpieces go on today and if they help him to settle better he could fulfil the promise he showed on debut especially given the current form of his yard.

17:50 Wolverhampton - HUSSAR BALLAD 10/1 0.5 Points Each-Way Hussar Ballad was a 14/1 winner for this blog a couple of starts back and I can't let him go off at double figure odds again without a small interest. I wrote how his recent runs had suggested the step up to 1m6f would be perfect and he proved me right when scoring over course and distance at the end of October, so it was a surprise to see him dropped back to 1m4f on his next start and he could never get involved in a slowly run affair. There's a chance this race may not be run to suit as there isn't much pace in the race but the extra two furlongs should see him get more competitive than on his last start. Given that he is 1-1 over this trip, he remains unexposed at this distance and may be able to follow up his recent C & D win off just 3lb higher. 19:20 Wolverhampton - BERLUSCA 7/2 1.5 Points Win Following horses time and time again is a quick way to the poor house, so it is a surprise that both...

12:20 Lingfield - CHESTER STREET 5/2 1 Point Win Chester Street was last seen back in October running in a class 2 handicap at Kempton where he was beaten just over a length despite racing keenly in the opening stages. The hood returns today which should help him settle better and he drops down to class 4 handicap company on a workable mark, judged by his success in a class 2 handicap at Chelmsford off a mark of 84 (racing off 87 today). He also has the talented Adam McNamara in the saddle who claims 3lb which helps too. 13:25 Lingfield - ESTIBDAAD 9/1 1 Point Each-Way Estibdaad ran a cracker from a wide draw to finish fifth here last time and could be able to take advantage of a better draw today. He took up the running a mile out last time and ran well until he tired in the final furlong, where the exertions of the wide draw took its toll. He races off a mark of 57, 3lb higher than when winning over 1m2f at Chelmsford, however he has won off marks as high as 67 in the p...

20:15 Newcastle - JESSIE ALLEN 8/1 1 Point Each-Way Jim Goldie continues to fire in the winners recently, with Testa Rossa bolting up for this blog on Wednesday evening. He has a few runners in with chances this evening at Newcastle and, as much as I don't often advise multiples, it would be hard to put you off a little trixie tonight. But one runner stood out to me particularly, Jessie Allen. This mare has been admirably consistent and finished second behind the current favourite, Breathoffreshair, over course and distance back in November despite missing the break and she is 6lb better off with that rival on todays terms. She backed that performance up when finishing second again over C&D on her next start beaten only 3/4 of a length. Jim Goldie's mare has run well in her last two starts on the tapeta at Wolverhampton over an inadequate six furlongs. Stepped back up to seven furlongs today, she is a confident selection, although her 0-33 record suggests an each-way...

13:30 Market Rasen -   MORIANOUR 11/2 1 Point Win I was surprised to see Morianour open as big as 11/2, he travelled well for a long way last time at Fontwell and could take some stopping here. After travelling well into the race, his effort weakened towards the closing stages and a mistake at the last didn't help, however he was only beaten 3 1/4 lengths. Evan Williams charge gets to race off the same mark today and is due to go up 5lbs, he also has the services of the talented conditional Mitchell Bastyan who takes off 3lb. If he arrives in the same mood he is up to winning this contest. 18:00 Newcastle -   TESTA ROSSA 13/2 1 Point Each-Way Testa Rossa has a good record over the mile trip here at Newcastle, scoring four times over C&D last winter, and he is only 1lb higher than one of those wins today. He returns from a short break, not seen since September but the Jim Goldie yard is going very well at present, so he could ...

16:35 Kempton -  MERCERS 10/1 0.5 Points Each-Way Olaudah could take some stopping in this, especially with talented apprentice Nicola Currie taking off a valuable 5lb, but he is short enough, so the suggestion is a small each-way play on Mercers at a bigger price. Mercers won an apprentice handicap, which was pretty solid for the grade, in good fashion on his last start and he is unpenalised for that success today and is racing off a 2lb lower mark. He won despite meeting trouble in running that day and it helps that Jason Watson remains in the saddle taking off 7lb, Paddy Butler's charge looks worth chancing each-way in a competitive looking contest.  17:10 Kempton -  TROTTER 15/2 1 Point Each-Way (Bet365 paying 1/4 Four places) Though still a maiden, Trotter has been a consistent performer and this step up in trip may finally see Stuart Kittow's gelding get his head in front. Back in October he finished a never nearer neck second i...

19:40 Wolverhampton - POINT NORTH 11/2 1 Point Each-Way (SkyBet 4 Places) Point North comes into this contest on a career low mark and his run over course and distance last time out showed he may be able to take advantage of that soon. Despite being hampered early on in his recent C&D run, he ran on well in the closing stages and was only beaten two lengths. Although it is a while since he landed a handicap (March 2016, off a mark of 74), he showed he still retains enough ability at the age of eleven when winning a claimer over course and distance in June. He has a 50% strike rate when dropped into class 6 handicaps (3-6) and given that 4 of his 10 career wins have come over this C&D, he must have a chance now down to a mark of 58.

Sunday 14th January 2018

15:25 Southwell - JOEY'S DESTINY 8/1 1 Point Win Joey's Destiny has tumbled down the weights in recent months and on his most recent start he showed the benefits of that when running a big race on the tapeta at Wolverhampton. He finished second to Dark Alliance that day, who has franked the form by following up and scoring next time at Lingfield. Joey's Destiny races off the same mark as last time out (65), and given that he has won off a mark as high as 89 in the past, he is certainly well handicapped. The biggest concern is whether he will handle the surface, but he is fairly versatile on the turf and if he does handle the Fibresand, he could prove tough to beat.

Friday 12th January 2018

17:00 Dundalk - DANZ GIFT 7/1 1 Point Each-Way On the face of it, it looks as though Danz Gift has a bit to find with current favourite, Flawlessly. However, the former has a significant pull in the weights with the favourite and it could be enough to reverse the form. He wasn't beaten far the last day, and the assessor has dropped him a very generous looking 5lb. He is now 7lb lower than when scoring over course and distance this time last year, so he should be getting competitive off this kind of mark. 19:15 Newcastle - TOMMY G 5/1 1.5 Points Each-Way Tommy G ran an absolute stormer last week over a trip which was probably a bit on the short side for him, the step back up to 7f could see him back in the winners enclosure today. Prior to his recent close second he ran at Newcastle twice and had excuses both times, but he looks on a workable mark and a solid each-way prospect here. The current favourite, Waarif, has to be respected but I suspect he may find this trip a t...

19:00 Chelmsford - TANGRAMM 4/1 1.5 Points Win

Wednesday 10th January 2018

18:45 Kempton -   ROBBIE ROO ROO 12/1 0.5 Points Each-Way Robbie Roo Roo has been disappointing on his last three starts but he may be worth chancing in this 6f handicap. He has had his excuses in those starts too, outpaced from an early stage at Chelmsford, raced wide for much of the contest at Wolverhampton and a combination of the soft ground and 7f trip did him no favours prior to that at Salisbury. Now back to the scene of his most recent win and just 1lb higher than that day, he could have a better chance than his odds suggest. It is also worth bearing in mind that his recent course and distance win came in a higher grade than this too, despite racing keen early on in the race.
