It looks a great days racing with the Irish Derby taking place at the Curragh and some good racing on the July course at Newmarket but the blog is heading to Newcastle for a trio of bets on their Northumberland Plate card.
SkyBet are paying 6 places on both of today's selections so worth getting on there if you can.
12:20 Newcastle
Shanghai Glory looks a standout bet for me in the opener at Newcastle. He has some smart handicap form in the book from last season, notably when fifth in the stewards cup off a mark of 101 on ground which would have been softer than ideal. Charlie Hills' charge then ran a blinder in the Great St Wilfrid at Ripon when finishing best of those racing stands side. He clearly needed his first run of the season but improved bundles to finish an unlucky third at Epsom on his latest start. The winner of that Epsom contest has since followed up off an 8lb higher mark and this mark of 97 could prove to be lenient for Shanghai Glory, especially on a surface on which his sire has a good strike rate. There are a few others you can make a case for, with Normandy Barriere interesting on his first run after a wind op with his stable amongst the winners recently. With the unexposed four year old Ekhtiyaar obviously warranting respect, but Shanghai Glory looks a very good bet to me.
Shanghai Glory 8/1 - 2 Points Win
13:30 Newcastle
The Grand Visir looked a thorough stayer when scoring at Haydock and is still very much unexposed so it's easy to see why he's being well backed as I write this, but I fancy another unexposed sort in the shape of Davy's Dilemma. He only ran three times last year, finishing fourth on his reappearance before winning both his subsequent starts. Michael Dods' gelding was only beaten a neck when returning to action this year off the back of a 305 day absence, he had Bedrock in behind and is now 4lb better off with that rival. He has shaped as though this step up in trip could eek out more improvement and it is difficult to see why he is a bigger price than the aforementioned Bedrock.
Davy's Dilemma 12/1 - 1 Point Each-Way
14:05 Newcastle
Sir Chauvelin's second in the Duke Of Edinburgh stands out to me here, especially with the winner looking potentially group class. Not only is the form of that race worth noting, but the manner in which Jim Goldie's gelding got up for second. He was denied a clear run more than once and was the only one from the chasing pack to make any noticeable late headway and hit the line strongly. Now 2lb well in here, he looks to hold excellent each-way claims if able to repeat the form, which must be a concern given that race was just 8 days ago. Obviously Withold holds outstanding claims in this given the devastating nature in which he tore apart the field in the Cesarewitch, but he isn't betting material for me at his current price. Amazing Red still seems to be improving at the age of five and is 4lb well in after a comfortable win at Newmarket last time out, he is also likely to prove a big player here.
Sir Chauvelin 18/1 - 0.5 Points Each-Way
