Glorious Goodwood 2019 - Day 1

Set at one of the picturesque tracks in the country, Glorious Goodwood is one of the highlights of the flat season for me, both from a viewing and punting perspective and there's one I'm chancing a few of my pennies on the first day of the meeting.

Unibet Handicap (Goodwood, 13:50)

The progressive Setting Sail is likely to prove very popular here after an excellent second in the John Smith's cup at York last time out. However, at current odds of around 7/2 there's not enough juice in that price for me in a race of this nature. Instead I'm looking at an option, although far from solid, who looks to offer a nice bit of each-way value.

Plutonian has some pretty serious questions to answer given he hasn't beat a single horse home in either of his last two starts, but I think he's had potential excuses and a return to this track can also be seen as a big positive. Charlie Hills' gelding ran a belter on seasonal reappearance when finishing fifth in the Spring Cup at Newbury, then ran too bad to be true next time out at York where the ground would've been fast enough for him anyway. Last time out he disappointed again when last at Chelmsford (lost a shoe), but theres a chance Goodwood could be more his bag.

He raced twice over this course and distance last summer, firstly when second off a mark of 97 in a decent handicap at the end of July. He revisited the Sussex track again towards the end of the season and put up another decent performance finishing second beaten half a length in a listed contest. Plutonian now finds himself back down to a mark of 96 and back to a track which clearly suits, if the forecast rain gets into the ground then that is another bonus but he'll go well enough on the current going of good too.

Plenty of firms offering extra places each-way so be sure to shop around.

Plutonian 20/1 - 0.5 Points Each-way
